Cholera

Cholera is caused by intestinal bacteria which cause an acute gastrointestinal infection with serious, aqueous diarrhoea and vomiting.

Cholera is common in countries with poor hygiene. The bacteria are transmitted through contaminated water and foods, and are often caused by drinking water contaminated with human faeces.

The treatment of the disease is primarily concentrated on avoiding fluid loss, which can cause a life-threatening dehydration of the body due to diarrhoea and vomiting.

Immunisation should be considered if travelling for a longer period in areas characterized by primitive conditions. For ordinary tourists, the risk of catching cholera is usually very low. The cholera vaccine also gives you a certain protection against “tourist diarrhoea”.
