A company that listens…

Since the beginning in the early seventies we have been very market alert and interested in hearing and learning from customers.

In fact it was one person’s cry for help that kick-started the company. A Danish sea pilot on Mauritius expressed his concern about no longer being covered by the Danish health system. He sent a post card with his queries to the national health insurance company simply called “danmark”. Quickly realizing that other expatriates shared the same concern as the sea pilot, “danmark” developed insurance plans for international citizens around the world.

In the beginning, the insurance plans were only aimed at Danes living abroad. But soon other nationalities showed interest in international cover.

In 1979 the share of international customers had multiplied and International Health Insurance danmark a/s was founded. After 20 years under the wings of “danmark”, IHI was bought by the private equity fund “EQT”. The sales and development results IHI produced together with EQT made it irresistibly attractive to the BUPA Group that bought IHI in 2005.

Constant innovation

Over the last 30 years IHI has introduced more new products than any of the competitors including preventative services, health consulting services and online solutions for the convenience of our customers. We continue to build a presence with a strong focus in Latin America, Asia, North and South Africa and Europe.
