Do I drink too much?

In addition to counting the number of units you drink a week, you can ask yourself a number of questions that will be a good guide for establishing whether you drink too much.

The questions were prepared by the Danish National Board of Health and are known as the nine danger signals. If your answer to more than one of the questions is a ‘yes’, there is good reason for you to reduce your consumption of alcohol.

1. Do you often come up with an excuse to have a glass of wine or a beer?
2. Have you ever promised yourself not to drink, say, for a whole week and then not been able to keep the promise?
3. Has anyone told you that you drink too much?
4. Have you tried to hide that you have a glass of wine or a beer to avoid confrontation with your family?
5. Have you failed to keep appointments with your children or others, because you had been drinking?
6. Have you been sick for days because of hangover?
7. Do you need to drink more than before to be influenced?
8. Do you get drunk at parties although you have decided not to drink too much?
9. Do you ever drink so much that you have trouble remembering what happened?
