Central European Tick-Borne Encephalitis (TBE)

Central European Tick-borne Encephalitis is caused by the tb-virus transmitted through the bite of ticks.

The tb-virus is prevalent in the Baltic countries, Russia and Siberia, at the Balkans, in some parts of Germany, Austria, Bornholm (Denmark) and on some islands in the Swedish skerries in the Baltic.

The peak season is from May to September and the risk is higher for hunters and other people who spend a lot of time outside in forest areas. Virus is present in roe deer and mice and can be transmitted to ticks. The disease is not transmitted from person to person.

Tb can be prevented through vaccination and wearing suitable clothes. Insect repellents appear to have no effect.
