You risk being infected with diphtheria through close contact with an infected person or a healthy disease carrier. You can prevent the disease through vaccination.
The disease is rare in countries where the population has participated in child-vaccination programmes and where there is access to revaccination every ten years. There are still epidemics in some countries.
